Multilingual dictation for Mac, in twenty-eight languages

Loquen dictates in twenty-eight languages with the same key, and it hears which one you are speaking from the sound alone. You can switch language mid-sentence without touching a setting.

Hold the key (Globe/fn by default), talk, let go, and clean, punctuated text lands at the cursor in any app. That works the same in Spanish, Polish, Greek or Ukrainian as it does in English. The model that hears English hears all of them, so there is nothing extra to download and it is no slower.

Every language Loquen dictates

Each name is written in its own language first. If you are looking for a dictation app for Mac in one of these, it is the same app, the same key and the same price.

Detected from the sound

You do not pick a language first. When you let go of the key, it works out which language you spoke from the audio itself, then writes it out in that language. There is no menu to visit between a message to a colleague in English and a reply to family in Portuguese.

Switch mid-sentence

Because detection comes from the sound, you can change language partway through a sentence and keep talking. People who move between two languages all day, at work and at home, can dictate the way they actually speak.

When to name a language in Settings

Detection is the default and usually all you need. Naming a language in Settings tells Loquen to bias the decode toward it instead of guessing. That is worth doing in three cases:

Naming a language also keeps the alphabets apart, so a Polish dictation never comes back in Cyrillic.

Vocabulary packs are English so far

Loquen ships twelve medical vocabulary packs, 5,862 terms in all, so drug names and clinical terms come out right: metoprolol no longer comes out as “metropolis”. Those packs are English so far. Dictation works in all twenty-eight languages; the specialty word lists do not follow you into another language yet. A pack is one plain JSON file, so anyone can write their own.

Private in every language

Every language runs on the Mac’s own chip, with the AI cleanup alongside it. In Private mode, the default, no audio and no text leaves the computer, whichever language you speak. See what stays on your Mac for the details.

Loquen runs on Apple Silicon Macs (M1 or later) with macOS 15 or later.

Questions

Do I have to choose a language before I dictate?
No. Loquen works out which language you spoke from the sound alone. Naming one in Settings is optional and helps in noise, with strong accents and with names.
Can I switch languages in the middle of a sentence?
Yes. Because the language is detected from the sound, you can change language mid-sentence and never touch a setting.
Is there a separate download for each language?
No. The model that hears English hears all twenty-eight. There is nothing extra to download and it is no slower.
Do the vocabulary packs work in other languages?
Not yet. The packs are English so far. Dictation works in all twenty-eight languages; the specialty word lists do not follow you into another language yet.
Does dictating in another language send anything online?
No. Every language runs on your Mac. In Private mode, the default, no audio and no text leaves the computer.
